Yoga is a Life Long Activity

At any age, yoga can be beneficial. One of the really amazing things about yoga is that it can be modified to fit any body, activity level and skill level. When practicing yoga, age is just a number. As we move through life there are ways yoga can meet the needs of the individual in any stage of life, regardless of age or ability. Everything from a simple held pose to a longer flow to an inversion can be modified to fit a wide variety of yogis.

Teens and younger adults can benefit from yoga’s ability to reduce anxiety and stress levels. Practicing can also help increase confidence level, body awareness and stress management skills. Starting these types of practices at a young age can help solidify it into a normal routine. A regular yoga practice can also give teens and young adults a break from omni-present technology and get them more in touch with their inner dialog.

During the middle adulthood years (20-40 years old), men and women can benefit from yoga to support self care as many become caregivers to others, enter the work force or face more strenuous life decisions. Stress management skills can be used during stressful life situations like job interviews, big life transitions or navigating complicated relationships. Yoga can also be an amazing part of a self care routine which everyone can benefit from, regardless of age!

As adults age the nerve impulses slow and it is common to lose muscle mass and balance skills. Older adults can benefit from increased strength, flexibility, balance and overall wellness. This can be the difference between a happy healthy retirement, and poor health and quality of life.

Where to start?

Starting your yoga practice can be as simple as sitting in a chair and working on breathing into your belly. This practice reduces anxiety and emotional strain, relaxes muscles, increases oxygen to the blood and blood supply to the bones and muscles, stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest system), decreases pain, strengthens and activates the core and pelvic floor, and improves posture.
