Gua Sha - Ask Your Acupuncturist

Traditional East Asian Medicine has a simple therapeutic technique known as Gua Sha or stroking to raise petechiae. This has numerous benefits ranging from pain relief to immune system strengthening. A tool is used on lubricated intact normal skin to stroke in one direction for 6-7 inches with a comfortable pressure repetitively, 10- 30 strokes in one spot. The key is the unidirectional movement on the connective tissue, like petting the cat it should feel good.

This usually will cause some local discoloration which is the petechiae, purple-red or brown spots on the skin. When this gets reabsorbed the process stimulates the immune system with lasting effects. To boost the immune system we cover as much of the torso as is easily reached and not contraindicated. Cytokines are produced which make nitrous oxide to speed healing and reduce pain. Biliverdin and Heme oxygenase -1 which reduces pain and inflammation and stimulates antiviral protection.(1)

This much benefit, safety and potency is unmatched in the pharmaceutical industry. Of course it must avoid moles, hair, pimples or wounds, and is contraindicated in pregnancy or for very frail individuals or those on blood thinners. But it is a simple and comfortable treatment that’s very beneficial and most Traditional East Asian Medicine practitioners are trained and ready to provide.(2)
