Moxibustion
The basics
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medical therapy that involves burning an herb over the skin to stimulate specific acupuncture points or areas of the body that would benefit from therapeutic heat. We typically use moxibustion poles to apply the therapy. The poles are a packed form of the herb Artemisia encased in carbon, which helps it to produce less smoke when it is lit. Once lit, the pole generates a steady heat that allows the patient to feel a warm and often analgesic sensation at the site. Don’t worry -- the pole never touches the skin. In many cases, moxibustion compliments an acupuncture treatment, is used as a stand-alone treatment, or recommended for at-home application. When performed at 34 weeks moxibustion has been proven to be more than 80% successful in turning breach babies.
