Holiday Self Care

In the hubbub of a holiday with family, it is challenging to find space and time for self care. It is easy to let the little moments pass you by without actually enjoying yourself. This is a lovely opportunity to realize that your self care doesn’t have to be something that takes you away from your life. It can be something that adds texture and enjoyment to life.

FIND A MOMENT

Pick something specific as a reminder to stop and savor. Your reminder could be as simple as a post-it note, a string on your wrist, or a small pebble in your pocket. Get creative! As you are moving through the next few weeks take little moments to really feel your body, notice your breath and turn your thoughts to something you are grateful for in that time and space. Orient your body to the moment and let the future moments take care of themselves for a few breaths. Focus on now and be truly present with yourself and your family this holiday.

SET BOUNDARIES

Spending time with family can be challenging for a lot of people and is a good time to set up boundaries. When you have clear boundaries you can enjoy yourself and your family with less defensiveness and misunderstanding. Clearly communicating is difficult to do and can be especially challenging with complex family dynamics.

A good start is imagining a boundary around your physical body. As you communicate, you can pause and decide how you want to respond. Imagine verbal exchange as it comes and goes from your imaginary physical boundary. Give yourself a breath before you reply and picture your words floating around in your boundary. Allowing space, breathing and pausing when communicating can reduce the stress response.

REMEMBER TO STAY PRESENT

Feel your feet on the ground and maintain the power of your posture as you communicate. Feel empowered to let go of controlling others reactions or words and focus on what you can control, your response and your body. This is the work your yoga practice has prepared you for! Use the tools you have fostered to be embodied and stand in your power as you interact this holiday season.
