How Chinese Herbal Medicine Can Help You Transition Seasons
Many of us feel more vulnerable during the change of seasons. From allergies to colds and flus, the start of a new season presents many challenges. The good news is that Chinese herbal medicine can help.
With flu season approaching, boosting immunity is a main priority for a lot of our patients. In addition to acupuncture, adding herbal support can assist in warding off infections during this time of year. One formula that can be very helpful prior to flu season is Yu Ping Feng San.
Before we learn about what Yu Ping Feng San does, we need to have a basic understanding of how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views immunity. In TCM, wei qi is in control of the surface of the body, and is charged with protecting it. When wei qi is functioning well, it is capable of managing the balance between opening the pores allowing sweat and toxins to escape and closing the pores to block pathogens from entering.
When one's wei qi is not functioning well, allergens and germs easily penetrate the body and cause disease because the surface isn't strong enough to keep the intruders out. Anyone can be vulnerable to a very strong pathogen, but for those who tend to get sick during a particular season, it may be worth using herbal medicine to strengthen your wei qi prior to the time you typically get sick. Yu Ping Feng San is one herbal medicine that does just that.
According to The Clinical Manual of Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines (pg. 348), Yu Ping Feng San "strengthens wei qi, supplements the Spleen, strengthens the surface." It further describes Yu Ping Feng San as an "immune stimulant." This makes Yu Ping Feng San a great herbal choice to take in preparation for season change.
